Meet Loafy: A Free Sourdough Companion Built on My Book
For years the same questions have arrived under my videos. Is my starter ready? Why is my bread flat? How long should my dough rise when my kitchen is warm? My book explains the why, but nobody reads chapter 7 with flour on their hands. So I built Loafy, a companion that stays with you from your starter to the finished loaf.
Last updated: October 9, 2026.
Loafy in one minute
- Free, in your browser. Open loafy.ai on your phone. Nothing to install, and no account needed for the bakes, timers and calculators. It speaks 38 languages.
- Guided bakes with timers. Step by step through your first loaf or your first starter, with every fold, proof and bake timed and explained.
- Calculators. Bread, pizza, hydration, and a zero-waste dough optimizer.
- Ask Loafy. An AI coach that answers from The Sourdough Framework and names the chapter. When the book does not cover something, it says so instead of guessing.
- Answers. More than 160 questions from my comments, answered by me, each with the passage from the book.
- Bake log and starter journal. Write down each bake and see what to change next time.
Why I built it
Recipes give you timings, and timings do not travel. Your flour, your starter and your kitchen are different from mine. In The Sourdough Framework I wrote that a recipe’s timing will not work for you in 99 % of the cases. The book teaches the principles instead, so you can read your own dough.
But principles are hard to apply at 11 pm when your dough looks strange. That is the moment Loafy is for. It turns the book into the next step for the dough in front of you, and it explains why that step matters, so you learn the principle while you bake.
A guided bake, step by step
The Bake Sourdough Bread journey takes you through 14 steps over 24 to 48 hours. Every step has a timer and a short explanation. If you do not have a starter yet, Create Your Starter walks you through it in about a week. There is also a journey for a stiff starter, for sweeter, more predictable bakes and a calmer fermentation.
Ask Loafy, with the source
Ask Loafy answers in your own words, in your own language, typed or spoken. Every answer is based on The Sourdough Framework and names the chapter it comes from, so you can read the full context. When the book has no answer, Loafy says so in the first sentence. I would rather have it admit that than make something up.
Without an account you get one question a day. A free account gives you five a day and keeps your history.
The answer library
The answer library collects the questions bakers actually ask, many of them from the comments under my videos. Each answer is mine, with the passage from the book and a link to the chapter. You can browse by topic: starter, fermentation, dough, baking and troubleshooting. There is a German edition too.
The calculators
- Bread calculator: dough weights, hydration and baker’s percentages for your loaf.
- Pizza calculator: sourdough pizza dough by the gram, for any number of pizzas.
- Hydration calculator: adjust flour and water for the crumb you want.
- Zero-waste dough optimizer: scale your dough to your containers, so you bake exactly what you need.
What Loafy cannot do
- It cannot see or touch your dough. Look at your dough, not the clock. Loafy tells you what to look for, but your eyes and hands decide.
- An AI can be wrong. That is why every answer names its chapter. If something sounds off, read the chapter.
- It does not replace practice. Bake the same recipe a few times before you change it. Your loaves will teach you more than any app.
For the coders
Loafy’s calculators and journeys are also available as tools for AI
assistants. Point an MCP client at https://loafy.ai/mcp, or read the
tool schemas as JSON. No API key, no sign-up.
Your assistant can work out real dough amounts instead of guessing them.
What comes next
I am working on Loafy Sense, a small device for your starter jar that tells you the moment your starter peaks. It is an early prototype and heading to Kickstarter later this year. If you want to hear when it launches, you can sign up on that page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use Loafy?
Not for the guided bakes, the timers and the calculators. Ask Loafy answers one question a day without an account and five a day with a free account, which also keeps your history.
Where do Loafy's answers come from?
From The Sourdough Framework, my free sourdough book. Every answer names the chapter it is based on, and when the book does not cover a question, Loafy says so instead of guessing.
Is there a Loafy app to install?
Loafy runs in the browser on your phone or computer at loafy.ai. There is nothing to install.
Which languages does Loafy speak?
The interface, the guided bakes and the calculators are available in 38 languages. You can ask Loafy in your own language. The answer library is in English and German.
